Tribunal claims up a quarter

Employment tribunal claims have increased by almost a quarter (23%) in the three months up to December 2018, when compared with the same period a year earlier. The increase follows a 90% increase in 2017 when compared with 2016.

The greatest number of claims were for unfair dismissal, unpaid or underpaid wages and breach of contract.

Commenting on the figures, Nick Soret, Head of Technical Development at Mentor, said: "The big increase in tribunal claims follows the abolition of charging fees to make a claim in July 2017. According to the latest figures, claim numbers are still increasing and the growth in unfair dismissal and pay claims shows how much those types of claim were suppressed by fees. Employers should take this as a wake-up call to get the basics right, or face time-consuming claims."
